Once upon a time, dinosaurs roamed the earth, now they’re only learnt about in classrooms. From history, we learn that these mighty creatures existed millions of years ago. Every now and then, we hear about new discoveries proving dinosaurs lived on this planet. But have you ever thought about what it would be like to find a dinosaur fossil in your own backyard? That’s similar to what happened to some random folks who were surprised to find out that relics of the past were hidden just a stone’s throw away.

Imagine digging a hole in your garden and instead of finding usual rocks, you find a dinosaur skeleton! In the state of Iowa, a group of people were surprised to find what they thought was another piece of regular old limestone. However, what they had discovered was actually a 475-million-year-old fossil of a seashell, which was special because the interior of the shell was almost perfectly preserved. That’s like finding a drawing from Van Gogh under your bed!

No need for a time machine – we too witness this in different parts of the world, from England to California. In England, there is a place known as ‘Dinosaur Island.’ Here, you can find thousands of dinosaur prints and fossils along the coastline. It’s not everyday that you come across a complete dinosaur skeleton just out in the open but that’s precisely what happened in California. A farmer, while digging a trench, struck something hard, which turned out to be none other than the skeleton of a 66-million-year-old dinosaur.

It’s not just dinosaurs that are found. There are numerous instances when people stumble upon other pieces of history. For example, a guy was just looking for some arrowheads and instead found bones of an ancient American Bison. He thought he was just walking around in his cornfield, but he was actually stepping on history!

This goes to show that the past is not as far away as we think. History is everywhere, sometimes literally underneath us. You don’t need to be a professional archaeologist to bump into these historical treasures. You just need a little bit of luck and a keen eye. So, who knows, maybe the next time you’re in your backyard, you might find a piece of history as well!
